I admit there is something soothing and even reassuring about what happens here.. do you think..?
It got me thinking about recruitment. Are we destined to always connect with someone the same as us? We have all heard of the "cloning effect" - is it easier for us to think ' you are like me' therefore I think I would be comfortable managing you or being around you all day'??
However, are we even able to manage ourselves, let alone understand how to manage another person? So complex. As a line manager you are expected to coach people, however, when does the manager receive coaching from their manager on how to coach people? Does your role become helping other people at the expense of yourself, once you get to a certain level, where you forget to practice what you preach to the rest of the organisation? You know, like when your manager doesnt do your appraisal coz you are HR... you'll be ok.. so long as the rest of the business gets them done.. We have all been there!
Are we just mearly fractal 'ling' ourselves into a business? rather than sometimes thinking 'is this the best person for the organisation'? I read somewhere recently.. 'recruit someone who really annoys you" - they will be different to you and add some diversity into your team and provide fresh prospectives and approaches. Are we really capable of making a decission like that at work.? could we stand to be working with that person day in and day out.. we are at work most of our lives and therefore it helps to get on with your work colleagues- right?
So is recruiting "yourself" the easy option? As the most amazing person at what you do? surely that is a good thing right? The person will be as equally as amazing? Bit short sighted don't you think.. but I imagine an easy trap to fall into for an in experienced recruiter... or perhaps we should promote a balance of both??
I'm sure you have all dealt with the phrase " this person would be fantastic at the job, but I just don't like them' - as an HR Manager you think .."ummm thanks mr/mrs line manager.. but not sure that this would be well received when giving feedback"!...
So... a bit of 'fractal' and a bit of 'factual' ??? that is my question to you all this evening.
