I have to say, a lot of the time business owners forget that their employees (or colleagues as I prefer to use) have different motivations, needs than they do. They don't own the business, they didnt set it up..a lot of open questions are thrown from my mouth, a lot of quiet pausing and a lot of "ohhh" moments and expressions follow. How do we get from here to here.... what are the steps? You've asked me to come in because something is not working.. how do you think we can fix it.. Heck.. most people already know the answers, they just need someone to manage the process and facilitate - yes, they are busy people and often get sucked into urgent operational issues - so just need someone to help them.
Employee engagement can be a very simple concept... but it really has to be believed in from the top and has to be a long term commitment from everyone in the business. However, it can reap many rewards. Sometimes, managers need to be sat down, brought to eye level and told.... no "there is no naughty step" - but a few tantrums... but in the end it's totally worth it when you see a business culture totally turn around... I can't stand the "you will do this and you will do that" approach.. it's totally gone.. so build and bridge and get over it!
