Blimey, this was in the days of Pop Idol, as I also got told off for having a poster of "vote Will Young" on the pilar behind me... and I had hair!! gulpp... i'm getting on a bit now. I used to remember thinking god, Will Young is loosing his hair.. now I have overtaken him somewhat.. hummm I wonder why?? Anway..... I remember by good friend Laura with her Team Gareth Poster!
The 'Bend and Snap' and a comment someone posted on the CIPD's group page on Linkedin, asking for information around study leave and policy comparisons, got me thinking about flexibility.
So I have worked for quite a few companies now, some flexible and discretionary and some not so. Personally, I prefer the Companies that don't give you X number of days for compasionate leave because 'that's our policy" and nothing more... WRONG!
When did we get so scared about being flexible?? - oooooohhhhh we might be treating someone unfairly and then get hauled up in a tribunial...YAWN.. Most of the happiest companies and may I say the most productive companies I have worked for have been where "common sense" is used alongside a very fluid policy.. yeah and so what if we are not treating everyone "the same".. imagine if someone close to you died and you can have 1 day off.. who on earth would want to work for that Company or even still carry on working for that Company. Yeah " it's fine, I understand, at least everyone gets treated the same here" ummmm.. no, that's not what the bereaved employee is going to be thinking! ..duhhh.
Being a personal trainer I understand how important flexibility is... If you do not train flexibility, you are going to, at some point develop an injury... to stiff and rigid is not good... so why do so many companies want stiff and wooden policies to tie them up in knots... happy people = less employee relations challenges = HR person gets to do more interesting and pro-active work = less employee relations challenges = productive and engaged Company = Happy HR person = less wrinkles... ok, so you get my drift.. Treat everyone has individuals... and understand individual circumstances... but with rational and common sense...
See......!! Bending does not always involve snapping.... unless you want to annoy your ex-boss . You know who you are S :))
